Did World Service live up to my expectations?

This year, for my birthday indulgence, I ventured to World Service Restaurant in Nottingham with my husband. It had been years since my last visit, back in the pre-parenting era when I frequented it for my CIM committee Christmas gatherings.

I first went in the year 2000, I went for cocktails guided by a housemate working in the brewery scene, always aware of the upcoming dining spots. As a fresh graduate burdened with student debts, the restaurant's decor captivated me - it exuded sophistication, mirroring the prices it commanded.

Upon our arrival, my husband and I opted to have a drink at the bar. However, we found ourselves alone in the midday quietness, which cast a slight shadow over the atmosphere. Notably, unlike Langar Hall or Harts, they lacked a cloakroom service, leaving us to juggle our coats throughout our visit - a minor inconvenience that stood out.

Surprisingly, the decor hadn't seen significant updates in over two decades, which felt a tad stagnant. Nonetheless, as we settled into our dining area, the sight of another couple dining eased my initial concerns. Thankfully, as the meal progressed, more diners trickled in, breathing life into the surroundings.

The service was impeccable, with attentive and amiable staff who inquired if our visit was for a special occasion. I shared that it was my birthday celebration.

Now, onto the main event…the food. While the cuisine leans towards European, our choice of miso-glazed mackerel for starters showcased a far East influence.

For my main course, I opted for the Salt-Roasted Celeriac, a savoury delight that necessitated additional sides for a complete meal…a point worth noting for future diners!

My sides included broccoli with lemon and garlic, braised cabbage, and new potatoes. My meal left me thoroughly content, though I still managed to indulge in a matcha panna cotta for dessert.

A charming surprise awaited at the meal's end, as the waitress presented my birthday treat adorned with a flickering candle - a thoughtful touch that added warmth to the experience.

A sweet surprise

In conclusion, our visit to the World Service Restaurant was undoubtedly enjoyable, yet there's always room for refinement. The addition of a cloakroom service could elevate the overall customer experience.
